DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson held Furman to 13 second-half points, and Stephen Curry netted a game-high 30 points as the Wildcats cruised to an 83-43 Southern Conference victory over the Paladins Wednesday night before a capacity crowd at John M. Belk Arena.
It was the Wildcats' 38th straight conference win and their 25th consecutive victory at Belk Arena.
The 'Cats' stifling defense put pressure on Furman all night long, and the Paladins managed just four points through the first 17:10 of the second half. Furman (2-14, 0-7 SoCon) shot 4-of-23 in the frame and 31.9 percent for the game.
The Wildcats (15-3, 8-0 SoCon) also forced 22 turnovers while only committing seven. It was the ninth time this season Davidson has held its opponent to under 40 percent shooting from the field.
Curry was 12-of-18 from the floor and 6-for-10 on 3-pointers. He added to his school record-tying 24th career 30-point effort with five steals and five assists, while not committing a turnover in 32 minutes of action. All-time leading scorer John Gerdy also had 24 career contests with 30-plus points.
Curry also moved into the top-25 in the NCAA Division I record books for career 3-pointers. He is tied with former Georgia Tech sharpshooter Dennis Scott with 351.
Will Archambault had his fourth double-digit scoring effort in the last five games with 13 points, including 3-of-5 from long distance. Andrew Lovedale anchored the defense, recording his second consecutive game with three blocks, including back-to-back swats on two possessions, and added a team-high seven rebounds and five points.
Steve Rossiter scored nine points, and Max Paulhus Gosselin added eight. Justin Dehm led Furman with 12 points to go along with four assists.
Davidson began the game on a 16-2 spurt, running out to an 8-0 lead before Furman scored its first basket at the 15:36 mark of the first half. Davidson answered with back-to-back steals on the following two possessions, both of which were converted into fast break dunks on the other end.
After the Paladins cut the lead down to four, Davidson countered with 10 unanswered points to stretch the advantage to 35-23 with five minutes to play. The 'Cats continued to pull away, outscoring Furman 18-4 in the paint, and knocking down seven 3-pointers as a team to go into the break with a 51-30 cushion.
Davidson dominated on the defensive end in the second half, holding Furman to just three points over the first 12 minutes while adding 22 of its own on the way to a game-high 49-point lead with 3:09 to play. The 'Cats tallied 25 points off turnovers in the contest and outscored Furman 32-8 in the paint to go along with 11-of-23 shooting from 3-point range.
Davidson will round out a two-game home swing when the Wildcats host Wofford Saturday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m.
NOTES: The 43 points given up by the 'Cats is their lowest since allowing 42 points to Sewanee during the 2004-05 season… Davidson has won 46 of its last 47 SoCon regular-season games, dating back to Feb. 25, 2006… Davidson hasn't trailed since 2:10 into the game against The Citadel, an active streak of 197:50… It was the third straight sellout at Belk Arena and the seventh in the last nine games.
