GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman's Connor Lind singled to right field with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Paladins to a 3-2 SoCon baseball victory over Davidson Friday night at Furman Stadium.
Davidson hurler Ian Horkley came on in the ninth and got Brian Harrison to strike out. After Campbell Lewis drew a walk, Matt Hemingway singled to right field, moving Lewis to third base.
Horkley gave way to Mike Frongello, who walked Joey Rodgers to load the bases. Frongello got the next batter, Marcus Rose, to hit a grounder to Matt Webb at shortstop. Webb came home and got Lewis at the plate, but Lind followed with the two-out single to win the game.
The 'Cats (10-30, 2-17 SoCon) got excellent pitching from starter Thomas Middour, who went 6.1 innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out five. Matt Sliwiak threw 1.2 scoreless frames without allowing a hit.
Jay Jackson, who entered the game with a 9-1 record on the mound for the Paladins (27-15, 13-6 SoCon), threw 8.2 innings, allowing two runs and six hits and striking out 10 batters.
Hugh Eden was 2-for-3 from the plate and scored a run for the Wildcats, while Tommy Piacenza went 2-for-4.
Eden singled to lead off the sixth inning, moved to second on a Brett Shore single and went to third on a throwing error. He scored on Webb's sacrifice fly to break a 1-1 tie.
Furman tied the game in the home half of the inning as Lind walked and scored later on a Reese Wade, one-out single, tying the game 2-2.
The 'Cats had runners on first and second with two outs in the eighth and got runners on the corners with two outs in the ninth but could not retake the lead.
The Wildcats and Paladins will meet again Saturday at Furman Stadium at 6 p.m.
