CHARLESTON, S.C. – Brett Shore, Zach Kayne and Chris FitzPatrick each collected two hits for the Davidson baseball team, but the Wildcats fell 9-3 to The Citadel in the opening contest of a three-game Southern Conference series at Riley Park Friday afternoon.
Kayne was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, while FitzPatrick was 2-for-3 and scored a run. Shore was 2-for-5 from the plate.
Thomas Middour threw four innings and allowed eight runs, but only four were earned as the 'Cats (8-20, 1-9 SoCon) made four errors in the game. Andy Bass had his best outing of the season, allowing one run and three hits in four innings of relief work.
Sonny Meade led the Bulldogs (20-13, 8-5 SoCon) with a 5-for-5 performance from the plate, scoring three runs, with one coming on a solo homer. Matt Reifsnider went 3-for-4 and registered four RBIs.
The Citadel loaded the bases with one out in the first inning and scored when Chris McGuiness was hit by a pitch. A Reifsnider single plated Meade, and a Davidson error aided the Bulldogs in adding two more runs as they opened a 4-0 lead.
Hugh Eden drove in FitzPatrick with a single to get the 'Cats on the board in the third frame. Shane Hammond followed with a single and scored later on a Kayne fielder's choice to trim the margin to 4-2.
Three Wildcat errors and a Meade homer, all with two outs in the inning, allowed the Bulldogs to push four runs across in the fourth as they extended the margin to 8-2.
Tommy Piacenza drove in Matt Webb with a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth, but Meade led off the bottom of the inning with a double and scored on a Reifsnider single for the final 9-3 score.
Because of impending inclement weather, Saturday's game has been moved to 1 p.m. at Riley Park. The teams will also meet Sunday at 1 p.m. in the series finale.
