CHARLESTON, S.C. – Senior Thomas Sander netted a season-high 21 points and added five rebounds to lead Davidson to a 70-58 SoCon men's basketball victory over the College of Charleston Saturday evening at a packed Kresse Arena.
It was the Wildcats' ninth straight win overall and their 21st consecutive regular-season conference victory.
Sander went 7-for-10 from the field and 6-for-8 from the charity stripe for the Wildcats (13-6, 11-0 SoCon), while junior Andrew Lovedale collected 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Stephen Curry finished with 16 points and six boards, and senior Jason Richards scored 12.
The Cougars did as good a job defensively as any team has this season on Curry but did not have an answer for the two-man game of Sander and Lovedale. The duo not only scored the bulk of Davidson's points, but also set up a number of each other's buckets with nifty passes on backdoor cuts to the hoop.
Andrew Goudelock led the College of Charleston (9-11, 4-6 SoCon) with 13 points, and Jermaine Johnson posted 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Cougars were hurt in part by sub par free throw shooting, hitting just 15-of-24 from the line, and shot 33.9 percent from the floor.
Sander scored eight of the 'Cats' first 18 points to spark Davidson to an 18-4 cushion to start the game. The Cougars opened the contest 2-of-13 from the floor and 0-for-6 from 3-point range. The Wildcats were all over the glass, outrebounding Charleston 26-15 in the frame, including 11 on the offensive glass, which turned into nine second-chance points.
Davidson extended the margin to 18 following a 3-pointer from the corner by Bryant Barr. Charleston hit consecutive buckets, the last of which was a 25-foot trifecta from the wing by Goudelock with 10 seconds to play. Richards pushed the ball up court and pulled up for a 3-pointer from the top of the key that rimmed out, but Sander was there for the tip-in that just beat the buzzer to give Davidson a 40-25 cushion at the half.
Neither team could get going in the second frame, and each club scored just six points in the first 8:04 of the period. The Cougars got the lead down to 12 on a Goudelock 3-pointer early in the stanza, but Davidson responded with consecutive buckets by Sander and Boris Meno.
Charleston trimmed the margin to seven points on a Tony White layup with 30 seconds remaining, but the 'Cats went 5-for-6 from the foul line the rest of the way to seal the win.
The Wildcats return home to host Wofford Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. in Belk Arena. That contest starts a stretch where the Wildcats play six of their last nine regular-season games at home. In addition, at least five of the nine will be broadcast live on television.
Game Notes: Davidson has started with a 11-0 league record three times under coach Bob McKillop… The 'Cats went on to post perfect conference records in both seasons… Curry reached double figures for the 46th consecutive contest... Lovedale made his ninth straight start, all Wildcat wins… Davidson has not trailed at any point in its last three contests.
