
Cats Score First Match Win of 2008 over Visiting Winthrop

DAVIDSON, N.C. — In their opening match of the 2008 season, the Davidson women's tennis team secured a 5-2 victory at home over the visiting Winthrop Eagles at Knobloch Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.
Davidson, who defeated the Eagles last year 4-3 to start the 2007 season, opens the season 1-0 for the second straight year. Winthrop falls to 0-2.
Opening up the season with their first wins of the year in singles play was senior Kim Whelan (Sewickley, Pa.), the sophomore combo of Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Teresa Wang (Charlotte, N.C.), and freshman Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany).
Davidson took four of the six singles matches on the afternoon.
Winning in straight sets were Wang, Rauh and Berry, while Whelan need an extra set to finish off Lisa Wilkinson at No. 4 singles by the score of 6-4, 6-7, 6-0.
Wang's 6-0, 6-2 win over Paula Perreira at No. 6 singles was her first career victory at that slot after playing mainly at No. 4 singles as a freshman last season.
Finally, picking up her strong play from the fall season in which she advanced to the singles semifinals in two of her fall events was freshman Rauh. She took a 6-3, 6-2 win over Yelina Fadina at No. 5 for her first collegiate win.
Davidson opened the match by taking two of the three doubles matches for an early 1-0 lead. Senior Kelsey Linville (Columbus, Ohio) and Berry earned an 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, while Whelan and Rauh closed out to point with an 8-4 victory.
This is the first of three straight for the Wildcats, who next play at No. 40 N.C. State on Friday, Jan. 25 for a 5 p.m. match.
