DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team, playing its third straight match in as many days to open the season, closed out the three-match affair with a 7-0 blanking of visiting Gardner-Webb on Saturday afternoon at the Knobloch Tennis Center on the campus of Davidson College.
Davidson ran its overall mark to 2-1 on the year, while GWU dropped its season opener to fall to 0-1. The Wildcats have won the last five straight meetings by the score of 7-0.
The 'Cats earned a clean sweep at all three doubles matches and then took all six singles matches, with five of them going just two sets.
Seeing their first action at No. 1 doubles was freshman Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany) and senior Kim Whelan (Sewickley, Pa.), who ran off an 8-4 win for the duos third straight win of the season.
Earning their first doubles victory together as a team was senior Meredith Skeeters (Greensboro, N.C.) and Lora Dushanova (Silven, Bulgaria) at the No. 3 spot where they scored an 8-2 win.
The duo then each earned their first wins in singles play this year. Skeeters took a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles, while Dushanova secured a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5. Just a year ago, Dushanova ratted off a 15-4 singles mark, including a 9-2 record at No. 6 singles.
Junior Michele Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.), who played twice at No. 1 singles last season, scored her first win of the 2008 campaign with a two-set sweep (6-4, 6-2) over Laura Kriett at the No. 1 singles spot.
Rounding out the Wildcat lineup was Whelan, Rauh and sophomore Teresa Wang (Charlotte, N.C.), who each registered their second singles wins of the season. Wang's battle with Monica Walser was the lone match to go into three sets, with Wang prevailing by the count of 6-7, 6-4, 10-7.
The Wildcats take a five-day break before gearing up for another home match, this time against USC Upstate on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 3 p.m.
