Sixth Season
Jay Poag rejoins the Davidson coaching staff and will work with the quarterbacks in 2009.
From 2002-03, Poag coached the running backs and wide receivers, tutoring Mid-Major All-American Barrett Johnson who amassed 980 yards receiving as a senior. He also mentored Brett Dioguardi, who led the PFL in receptions in 2006 and ranked second in receiving yards per game on his way to earning first-team All-PFL accolades.
A 1987 graduate of the college, Poag served as a student assistant coach for the 1986 season after completing his football eligibility the previous fall. He played quarterback, running back and wide receiver at Davidson and as a senior, led Davidson with 37 receptions for 406 yards.
Poag has more than 12 years of coaching experience, including six years as the offensive coordinator for Presbyterian. He also spent two years at Lenoir-Rhyne and another two at NC State while earning his master’s degree in sports administration.
“Having Jay back on the staff is a boost to the program,” said Merritt. “He knows the offense well and has a great rapport with the players.”
Poag lives in Davidson with his wife, Amy, and they have three children, a daughter Jamie (20), and two sons, Brandon (11) and Jacob (3).
