DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sophomore Tyler-Xavier McKnight got his first-career tournament win with four straight wins and a pin in the finals to highlight Davidson's Wildcat Open. In all, four Wildcats placed on the day.
In his 76th career match, sophomore Tyler-Xavier McKnight completed a clean sweep of the 149-pound bracket with a tech fall, two decisions and a pin in the first 98 seconds of the final.
The Cartersville. Ga. native worked a 17-2 tech fall over Sam Harris (Gardner-Webb) before moving on to defeat Peter Chacon (Duke) in a 5-2 decision. In the semifinals, McKnight defeated another Blue Devil without surrendering a point to move on to the final. In the championship bout, McKnight needed less than 100 seconds to flip Dylan Ross for two separate counts of back points before eventually sealing the pin.
With Sunday's 4-0 outing, McKnight boosted his season record to 26-12 and has 19 Division I wins. Likely heading to his second conference tournament, "TXM" has a 47-29 career record in his 76 matches.
Other Wildcats who earned podium honors were Tyson Sherlock (141), Bryce Griffin (165), and Anderson Heap (157).
Sherlock, a freshman from Pittsburgh, went 3-1 at 141 pounds and used two pins and a tech fall to advance to the championship before dropping the first-place bout to UNC's Luke Simcox. He currently sits at 14-7 overall on the season.
Griffin, also a freshman, found himself in the finals of a 7-man 165-pound bracket after collecting a tech fall and a second-period pin in the opening two rounds. He then fell to NC State's Luke Ahrberg in the final to take second. The Bethalto, Illinois native is 17-13 on the season with four SoCon dual wins.
Rounding out Davidson's placewinners was Anderson Heap at 157. Heap won his first two bouts via a 17-3 major and a 4-1 decision over Pete Winterstein of NC State.
