DAVIDSON – Rafael Castro scored 20 points and George Washington shot 52 percent as the Revolutionaries held off Davidson 74-67 in Atlantic 10 men's basketball action Saturday inside John M. Belk Arena.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 15-10 overall and 5-7 in league play.
Despite the setback, Bobby Durkin finished with a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds for the Wildcats, who were just 6-of-22 from long range.
He was joined in double figures by Zach Laput (17) and Reed Bailey (16).
After a Durkin trey tied the game, 59-59, with just under five minutes to play, George Washington (17-9, 6-7 A-10) responded with four straight and later with a 3-pointer from Christian Jones to go in front for good.
Castro, who finished 6-of-7 from the floor and 8-of-10 at the stripe in 35 minutes, was one of four George Washington players to crack the 10-point plateau. Jones added 12, while Jacoi Hutchinson and Gerald Drumgoole scored 11 each.
Davidson, which trailed by as many as 16 in the opening 20 minutes, closed the half on a 14-3 run, capped by a Durkin trey at the buzzer to cut the deficit to 32-27 at the half.
The Revolutionaries started 8-of-12 from the floor and opened up their double-digit lead thanks mainly in part to 14 unanswered early in the contest.
In addition to a 29-28 edge on the glass, the Wildcats finished a perfect 15-of-15 at the charity stripe.
