DAVIDSON, N.C. – The 2025-26 season tips off at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 3rd when Davidson takes on DeSales inside John M. Belk Arena on ESPN+. Single-game and season tickets are available HERE.
"What has really stood out about this group, especially in these recent weeks leading up to the season, has been our versatility," said head coach Matt McKillop. "We can play in so many ways and adjust in many ways on both the offensive and defensive end. I don't believe that's a luxury we've had in years."
NEWCOMERS
The Wildcats have eight newcomers on the roster and four of them are transfers. Josh Scovens came over from Army West Point. Scovens was a second team All-Patriot League selection as a sophomore and the year prior was the Patriot League Rookie of the Year. Sam Brown played two seasons in the Ivy League at Penn. Brown was a second team All-Ivy League selection as a sophomore. That same season he led the conference in scoring (19.3 PPG) during 14 Ivy League games.
Parker Friedrichsen arrived from Wake Forest and JaQualon "JQ" Roberts spent the previous two seasons at Vanderbilt. Both were four-star recruits out of high school, according to ESPN.
"The transfers all bring a different type of experience," said Coach McKillop. "From JQ Roberts and Parker Friedrichsen going up against ACC and SEC players ever single day to Josh Scovens and Sam Brown who had a major role with their programs, this all can translate immediately to playing well at Davidson."
The freshmen class features RJ Greer, Ian Platteeuw, and Devin Brown. Greer is the son of Dayton associate head coach Ricardo Greer. Platteeuw is fresh off a gold medal with Spain this summer at the U18 EuroBasket Championships and earned MVP honors. Brown, who went to Olentangy Orange High School, won a state championship earlier this year and was named Division I Ohio Player of the Year.
"The overall impression with the freshmen is they can be the most impressive and talented class when it's all said and done that we've had at Davidson in a very long time," said Coach McKillop.
"They are all different. RJ is a lights-out shooter, can move without the ball, and is tough. Devin is very versatile, can play one through four, defend, and make shots. He's a gamer. Ian is about as skilled a big man as I can recall playing for Davidson. I'm not saying he's better than some of the players of the year that we've had, but his ability to pass, dribble, see, and run offense is exceptional."
John Nowland rounds out the eight newcomers on the roster. Nowland was previously a student manager at Davidson.
"The overall impression of the newcomers is that they've totally bought in to, not just being a member of this basketball team, but they've also bought in to the culture of our program.
RETURNERS
Davidson returns eight scholar-athletes from a season ago. This includes Hunter Adam, who saw major minutes last year, and Sean Logan, who started the first 11 games before a season-ending injury.
"I've seen tremendous growth from each of the returners," said Coach McKillop. "Hunter Adam has grown so much as a leader by bringing energy every single day to his teammates in practice. Joe Hurlburt's growth has been shown through work ethic and attitude, which has turned him into the player we always imagined that he could be for us at Davidson."
"Roberts Blums has shown incredible consistency in practice," added Coach McKillop. "The next step for him is to be able to consistently produce not just in practice, but to do it in games. Manie Joses and Sean Logan have improved athletically and physically. Their recovery has allowed for that. We're excited to get them back into a rhythm."
Finally, Nick Coval returns to the team as well and is set to face his father, Scott, in Monday night's season opener. Scott Coval is the head coach at DeSales.
"It's going to be pretty special," said Coach McKillop. Learning about his father's playing and coaching history, really his whole family, made it easy to see that he could have a great future here."
Coval redshirted last season for the Wildcats.
"Some people see that redshirt year and they just go about their day to day," said Coach McKillop. "Nick wanted more and was never afraid to ask for additional help. I would end up going to him after games [last season] and say what did you see out there?"
MESSAGE TO FANS
"I am incredibly optimistic, encouraged, and excited," said Coach McKillop. "We have all the pieces in place to be a very good team and compete for an Atlantic 10 championship. We're going to have to continue to get better day by day. I know we will because I've seen the way these guys work and care about each other.
