Wildcats Rally To Win Over Gardner-Webb

4/15/2024 8:38:00 PM | Women's Tennis

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Davidson women's tennis team snapped a two-match losing streak in fine fashion with a 5-2 win over in-state opponent Gardner-Webb Monday.

"I am extremely proud of how the team came together today," said head coach Susanne Depka. "The support of each other was amazing to see and I believe it helped them tremendously. Their energy on and off the court was a direct correlation to their success. We also dealt with adversity better today and our mentality was also much improved. Gardner-Webb makes you play a lot of balls and the matches are very physical and mental, so to come out on top is a great achievement.

The Bulldogs took the first doubles win of the day via 6-1 triumph on court three, however, any hope of Gardner-Webb taking the team point was shut down when Daniela Porges and Kavya Patel secured a 6-4 win on court one followed by Emma Heiderscheit and Savanna Kollock holding on for a 7-5 victory in the No. 2 spot.

Heiderscheit continued her winning ways with great energy into singles action, taking another team point for the 'Cats with a 6-3, 6-2 win on court three. Kollock extended the Wildcats lead to 3-0 from the No. four spot, earning a 7-5, 6-4 win of her own in expressive fashion.

The Bulldogs did not go down without a fight as they scored back-to-back team points with a two-set victory on court two and three-bout win on court six.

Both Bryson Langford in the No. 5 spot and Porges in the No. 1 spot saw their matches extend to three sets after each falling in the first 6-1 and 6-3 respectfully before battling to 6-4 and 7-5 second sets. Rookie Langford would wrap up her third set first to clinch the match for Davidson via 6-2 win while Porges battled to an insurance point with a 7-5 third-set victory of her own.

Davidson will play its final regular season match 1 p.m. April 20 against South Carolina State University on what will be the Wildcats Senior Day match.
