DAVIDSON, N.C. – Led by Reed Bailey's career-high 25 points, Davidson regained its footing and overcame a late deficit to defeat Charleston Southern 73-72 Friday night in Belk Arena.
After leading much of the game, Davidson needed an 8-0 run down the stretch to move ahead of the Buccaneers, who got a 3-pointer from R.J. Johnson at the buzzer to finalize the scoring.
Along with Bailey's scoring, the Wildcats also got 21 points from Connor Kochera, and Bailey and Kochera finished with five assists apiece.
Davidson (6-2) closed the first half on a 9-0 run to lead 37-31 at the intermission and extended its lead to 50-40 on a Kochera bucket with 14:45 to play. But the Buccaneers scored 24 of the game's next 32 points, including 7-0 and 10-0 runs, to lead 64-58 with 5:58 to play. A Bailey drive and dunk, though, electrified the crowd and broke a stretch of more than six minutes between Wildcat field goals.
Then Kochera and Bailey provided all the points in the decisive eight-point run that pushed the Wildcats ahead 70-66 with 1:20 to play, and the two also combined to hit the Wildcats' final three free throws.
Bailey's previous career-high was 24 points, which he matched against Bowling Green this year.
Tajé Kelly led Charleston Southern (3-8) with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds.
