DAVIDSON — Katie Donovan scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Davidson Wildcats past cross-county rival Charlotte 82-55 — and help them keep the 704 Cup for another year — Saturday afternoon in Belk Arena.
It's Davidson's fourth straight win over the 49ers, and the third in as many years of the 704 Cup. The Wildcats improved to 5-7 and remained unbeaten at home.
A sophomore guard from Australia, Donovan finished 9-of-11 from the floor, hit all six of her free throws and was key in the third quarter as the Wildcats turned a 37-31 halftime lead into a 60-39 advantage. She scored 14 points in the period and surpassed her previous high of 19, which she scored at Ball State Dec. 5.
The Wildcats' lead peaked at 78-48 in the fourth quarter.
Davidson's first quarter was its best offensive quarter of the season. The Wildcats shot 81.8 percent (9-of-11) in the first, while scoring 30 points. It bested the Wildcats' 28-point third quarter against Presbyterian and their 70-percent third quarter against FGCU.
Charlise Dunn hit four 3-pointers and added 14 points, while Issy Morgan and Candice Lienafa scored 11 apiece.
Charlotte (5-6) was led by Kay Kay Green's 12 points.
