DAVIDSON — Reed Bailey had 18 points and eight boards and led four double-digit Wildcat scorers in Davidson's 76-70 win over East Tennessee State Saturday evening in Belk Arena.
With their second home victory, the Wildcats improved to 3-0, as Zach Laput scored 14 points and Bobby Durkin and Connor Kochera added 13 apiece.
Davidson overcame ETSU's hot second-half start and took the lead for good on a Laput floater with 4:30 to play, and Laput's old-fashioned three-point play, which made it 71-67 with 1:02 left, also proved pivotal in putting away the Bucs. ETSU got within a bucket, 72-70, on a John Buggs III trey with 5.7 seconds left, but from there, Durkin and Kochera sealed the win by hitting two foul shots apiece.
The Wildcats led 13-2 in the opening minutes, as the Bucs hit just one of their first 11 shots. But ETSU (2-2) climbed back and trailed 28-25 at the half. Then the Bucs had two 8-0 runs early in the second half and led by as many as seven, 43-36, as they shot 8-of-14 from 3-point range (57.1 percent) after the break.
With Bailey a go-to option in the lane throughout, the Wildcats finished with a 42-26 advantage in points in the paint and also out-rebounded the Bucs 36-24.
Jaden Seymour and Quimari Peterson led ETSU with 21 and 19 points, respectively.
