Davidson Hosts Annual Wildcat Classic

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson volleyball team will play its first games of the season in front of its home crowd this weekend as part of the program's annual four-team tournament, the Wildcat Classic.Â
Northern Illinois, Queens University and UNC Wilmington will join the 'Cats in Belk Arena for a three-match round robin series, as the Wildcats will play their first home game on Friday at 7 p.m. against Queens. Davidson will then turn around and face Northern Illinois at noon on Saturday before closing out the tournament with a 6 p.m. first serve against the Seahawks. Both Davidson matches will air on ESPN+ on Saturday with Sam Goldfarb on the call.Â
LAST WEEKEND... Davidson volleyball completed its opening weekend in perfect fashion last Saturday, sweeping West Virginia in three-straight sets for its first win over a Big 12 opponent in program history. The 'Cats had also defeated Le Moyne College and College of Charleston, their first time beating the Cougars in 23 years, en route to the 3-0 weekend. After winning the Charleston Classic trophy, sophomore Anna Withee was named Tournament MVP, recording 11 kills off 12 attempts in the final match of the weekend, while Emma Slusser and Xuan Nguyen were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
WITHEE'S WEEKEND... Anna Withee made a name for herself after the first weekend of her sophomore season, hitting .629 with 24 kills on 35 swings. The Atlanta native currently ranks third in the nation in hitting percentage, and is more than halfway to her freshman year total in kills (41).
'CAT STATS... Bella Brady has picked up double-digit digs in 35 of her last 36 outings. Elena Garcia-Guerrios averages 3.00 kills per set, and recorded the first double-double of her career against College of Charleston with 11 kills and 15 digs. Reigning Rookie of the Year Emma Slusser leads the team in total kills (31), points per set (3.78) and kills per set (3.44). Xuan Nguyen and Jessie Doyal have paced the Wildcats' offense in tandem this season, combining for 95 total assists. Nguyen, who earned All-Tournament honors last weekend, leads the duo with 6.14 assists per set.Â
