ouDAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson women's tennis team picked up its second straight win, and third of the season this afternoon, after downing the Western Carolina Catamounts, 6-1.
In the Wildcats' outdoor opener on their very own Davidson Tennis Courts, the 'Cats swept the doubles matches and earned five singles victories on the day.
"The team did great today," echoed Head Coach Susanne Depka. "Especially with our first match outside. They faced some adversity at times and responded well. The energy was awesome and it was so fun to see them compete today."
Nicole Krykanov and Josie Schaffer picked up their third win as a doubles duo, and led from court one with a 6-3 victory. Mira Gladstone and Franny Shea followed court one's momentum, and picked up a 6-3 win of their own for their second doubles win of the year. Senior Alyssa Hahn and freshman Ava Ignatowich teamed up for the first time this season, and took a commanding 6-2 court three victory.
On the singles side, Schaffer set the tone from court one with a two set victory, including a 4-0 tiebreaker. Gladstone, Ignatowich and Hahn all picked up solid two-set wins as well, while rookie Ignatowich won her first match from court four this season.
A Montana native, Shea had to battle through a three-set match to come out victorious. After falling even at 1-1, the sophomore pulled off the 6-3 third set win to solidify Davidson's 6-1 nonconference victory.
With the win, the 'Cats improve to 3-4 on the young season and will be back in action this Wednesday at 4 p.m. to take on Kennesaw State.
