ELON, N.C. – Elon University held the Davidson Wildcats to 24 percent shooting from the field in the second half of Sunday's contest to win the 30th all-time meeting between the two programs, 65-51.
Elle Sutphin led the 'Cats in scoring with 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting from inside the Schar Center, while senior Chloe Welch recorded the third double-double of her career with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sarah Konstans also added eight points off 3-of-3 shooting from the field and a 2-of-2 effort from beyond the arc.
The Wildcats took control of the game early on, forcing two Elon turnovers before the first basket of the day was scored. Davidson, which found itself with a 15-4 lead just nine minutes in, rattled off its largest streak of the day with a 7-0 tear to end the first frame with a 46.2 percent effort from the field and a 15-7 lead.
After Davidson held Elon to just a 22.2 field goal percentage in the first, the Phoenix eventually turned it on, going on their own 8-0 run and pulling within four of the Wildcats, 26-22. Despite the surge, Australia natives Issy Morgan and Adelaide Fuller drained back-to-back baskets to end the Phoenix tear and let the 'Cats pull away to a 30-26 advantage heading into the break.
Elon opened up the second half on its second 8-0 run of the day while also taking its first lead of the day, 32-30, with 6:23 left in the third. Sutphin broke the ice and scored Davidson's next six points to regain the Wildcats' lead, but Elon bounced back and outscored the 'Cats 11-3 to close out the third quarter and expand on its earlier lead, 43-39.
Over the final quarter, Elon outscored Davidson 22-12 while converting 17 points off turnovers in the second half alone.
