DAVIDSON, N.C. -- After a neck-and-neck match up, which saw the game tied at 66-all heading into the final quarter, the Davidson Wildcats fell 87-78 to the Columbia Lions on Friday night in their home opener.
The Wildcats shot 26-of-53 (49.1%) from the field during the first three quarters of the night, but hit just five field goals in the fourth as the Lions escaped to the game-defining nine-point advantage. Overall, Davidson finished the night shooting 46.3 percent from the field and hit 12 treys while Columbia torched the nets at a 51.7 percent clip.
Suzi-Rose Deegan made her junior year debut with a game-high 26 points on 11-of-19 shooting, hitting four three-pointers and grabbing six rebounds. Issy Morgan (14 pts) and Elle Sutphin (11 pts) were Davidson's other double-digit scorers, while senior Sarah Konstans led on the glass with a team-high seven rebounds.
After winning the first quarter 24-20, Davidson went on to shoot a game-best 52.9 percent in the second, led by back-to-back three's from Konstans and Deegan midway through the frame. The Wildcats carried their momentum into the end of the half as well, going on a 9-0 run over the final two minutes to erase a seven point deficit with six seconds to go, before heading into the break down 46-45.
With a gridlocked third quarter, Davidson took its largest lead of the day at 64-59 after Adelaide Fuller drained two free throws. But, as Columbia closed out the frame with a 4-0 scoring run, the Lions rolled into the fourth on another 13-3 run and created a deficit too large for the Wildcats to overcome.
