Wildcats Fall to Colonials in 4OT Thriller

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a game that featured 20 lead changes, 17 ties, four overtimes and almost three hours to decide, George Washington edged Davidson, 107-104, in Atlantic 10 men's basketball action Wednesday evening inside the Charles E. Smith Center.
After the Wildcats had game-winning attempts at the end of the first three overtimes, the Colonials jumped out to a 103-98 lead on consecutive treys from Jameer Nelson Jr. and Jamison Battle in the fourth extra session to go in front for good.
Davidson (10-10, 4-4 A-10) got to within two several times in the closing minute and had one last try to go 94-feet with four seconds remaining, but was unable to get a shot off.
Despite the setback, the 'Cats had five players score in double figures, led by Jon Axel Gudmundsson, who recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 31 points and 10 rebounds to go along with 6 assists in 58 minutes.
Kellan Grady logged 56 minutes of his own to score a season-high 28 points, while Luka Brajkovic (14), Hyunjung Lee (12) and Carter Collins (10) also cracked the 10-point plateau for the Wildcats.
Maceo Jack (35) and Battle (25) combined for 60 points and 11 3-pointers to lead the way for the Colonials, who also got double-doubles from Chase Paar (13 pts, 16 rebs) and Nelson (12 pts, 10 rebs).
In the second overtime, the Wildcats led by as many as six with just under three minutes to play before George Washington (10-11, 4-4 A-10) closed on an 8-2 run and forced another frame on an Arnaldo Toro layup with 15 ticks left.
Both teams were impressive at the offensive end in the opening 20 minutes as the Colonials went to intermission up, 42-40. Jack led the way for George Washington in the period with 18 points, including five 3-pointers, while Gudmundsson had 15 for the 'Cats in the first half.
At the end of regulation, the Wildcats led 72-69 before Jack hit one of his seven 3-pointers in the game with 40 seconds left to even the score.
Davidson, which entered as one of the top free-throw shooting teams in the nation, connected on 16-of-26 from the stripe, while the Colonials converted 26 of their 38 tries.
