DAVIDSON — Exhausting and exhilarating, all at once.
That's how Bob McKillop described his Davidson Wildcats' 72-59 Atlantic 10 Conference win over Saint Louis Wednesday night in Belk Arena.
He saw his team empty its tank in a second straight league win and improve to 9-9 overall and 3-3 in the A-10.
"I thought our aggression was superb," said McKillop.
Davidson outrebounded the league's best rebounding team 38-36 and also converted 26-of-32 shots at the foul line, led by Jon Axel Gudmundsson, who hit 15-of-16 en route to a game-high 20 points.
The Wildcats set the tone early with their defense, built a 29-20 halftime lead and kept the Billikens (14-5, 3-3) from getting the lead all night. Once Saint Louis tied the game at 41-all with 11:04 to play, the Wildcats answered with an 8-1 run, which started with a Gudmundsson three-point play and was capped by a Mike Jones triple from the right wing.
"Once they tied it up, we did a great job staying calm," said Jones, who also gave the Wildcats a boost with two blocks. "We handled it really well and were able to close it out."
Davidson's lead grew to 69-57 with 1:21 to play.
Gudmundsson added eight boards to his scoring output, while Kellan Grady paired 18 points with seven rebounds. Luka Brajkovic had 12 points, eight boards and three blocks, and Carter Collins also scored in double figures (10).
Saint Louis was led by guard Javonte Perkins, who scored a career-best 25 for the second straight game. Jordan Goodwin and Hasahn French, who comprise the country's only double-double duo, each finished with six points and 12 boards.
