ROCK HILL, S.C.  — Despite Alexandra Abele and Samatha Armas both winning their fifth singles matches of the season, Davidson dropped a 5-2 decision Wednesday afternoon in women's tennis on the road at Winthrop.
 
The Wildcats fell to 4-2 on the year, while the Eagles moved to 3-2 as both teams were meeting for the 26th time. The 'Cats still hold a 16-10 lead in the series.
 
The two lone team points came from Abele and Armas in singles play at No. 3 and 4 positions, respectively. Abele pulled out a three-setter, regrouping from falling in the first set, 6-2, to score wins of 6-3 and 6-2 in the final two sets to move to 5-1 on the season.
 
Armas also improved to 5-1 on the season, scoring a straight-set 6-3, 6-3 decision. She is now 3-1 on the year at the No. 4 position.
 
Winthrop took the doubles point to start the match after getting wins of 6-2 and 6-1 at No. 1 and 2 spots. The duo of Megan Scholvinck and Elizabeth Truluck, who fell to 4-2 on the year, faced the No. 20 doubles pair in the country at the top spot.
 
Davidson next plays this Saturday, Feb. 9, at home against Gardner-Webb.
