ORLANDO, Fla. – Davidson placed four in double figures and closed with an 11-2 spurt to hold off Fairfield, 67-56, on day two of the 2019 Orlando Invitational at HP Field House.
The Wildcats will conclude their appearance in the annual event Sunday with a 4 p.m. tip against Temple, which fell to Maryland in the opening round and defeated Texas A&M earlier today. The contest will be televised on ESPN2.
Kellan Grady paced Davidson (3-4) with 15 points and was joined in double digits by Carter Collins (14), Luka Brajkovic (13) and Jon Axel Gudmundsson (11).
Trailing by 16 at the break, Fairfield (1-6) used a pair of second-half spurts, including a 12-4 run late, to cut the deficit to 56-54 with just under four minutes to play.
Davidson responded with four straight and also got a triple from Mike Jones with 47 seconds left, to put the game out of reach.
A day after having their streak of 809 consecutive games with a made 3-pointer ended, the Wildcats finished 9-of-24 from long range.
In addition, Davidson converted 14-of-16 from the charity stripe and held a slim 28-27 advantage on the glass.
Tied early, Wildcats broke open the game with a 26-5 streak and led by as many as 21 in the opening period before going to the half up, 35-19.
Jesus Cruz and Landon Taliaferro were the only Stags to score in double figures with 10 points each.
