Late Run Leads Marquette Past 'Cats in Orlando Invite Quarters

ORLANDO, Fla. – Marquette's Markus Howard scored a building-record 40 points and the Golden Eagles closed on a 20-7 run to get by Davidson, 73-63, in the opening round of the 2019 Orlando Invitational inside HP Field House Thursday.
The Wildcats will play Fairfield tomorrow night at 7 p.m. on ESPNEWS.
Kellan Grady led the way for Davidson (2-4) with his first career double-double, scoring 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting, while grabbing a personal-best 10 rebounds.
In a game that featured 10 ties and 10 lead changes, the Wildcats went in front 56-53 on a pair of free throws from Grady with 4:05 to play. Howard answered for Marquette (4-1) the next trip with one of his five 3-pointers, sparking the game-changing run.
Davidson, which entered averaging almost 10 made 3-pointers per game, finished 0-of-15 from behind the arc, ending its streak of making at least one long range jumper at 809 consecutive games. The last time the Wildcats failed to make a trey in a contest was Jan. 15, 1994 in a 65-63 win over East Tennessee State.
Despite five players in first-half foul trouble, the Wildcats held the Golden Eagles to just six field goals in the period to grab a 26-25 lead at the break. Davidson led 26-20 late in the opening 20 minutes before Howard scored the final five points, including a triple at the buzzer.
The two teams combined to commit 49 fouls and attempt 61 free throws. Marquette finished 27-of-38 at the stripe, while the 'Cats converted just 15 of their 23 tries.
The Wildcats shot 45.3 percent and held a 35-33 edge on the glass.
