Davidson Overcomes Slow Start, Downs Fordham on the Road

BRONX, N.Y. — Sarah Donovan (6) and Justine Lyon (9) combined for 15 points in the fourth quarter and Davidson overcame an early 15-point deficit in pulling out a 60-56 comeback win in Atlantic 10 play at Fordham Sunday afternoon inside Rose Hill Gym.
Down 42-37 entering the fourth quarter, the Wildcats ran off a 16-4 run to grab a 53-46 lead with 2:17 left and held off a couple late three-pointers from the Rams to move to 5-1 in A-10 play and 11-8 overall. Lyon and Donovan tallied 11 combined points during the winning spurt.
Donovan registered her eighth double-double of the year on 12 points and 12 rebounds, while adding four assists. Lyon finished with 15 points and six rebounds off the bench.
Giving the 'Cats their third double-figure scorer was Alley Welling with 10 points, while Katie Turner had seven points, six assists and five rebounds.
Fordham (13-8, 4-3 A-10), which led 24-9 in the early going, had four starters reach double figures. Mary Gouldling had 16 points and 15 rebounds, Lauren Holden scored 11, and the pair of Kaitlyn Downey and Bre Cavanaugh finished with 10 points.
The 'Cats defense held the Rams to 4-of-17 shooting in the fourth quarter, including 2-for-10 from behind the arc, while going just 8-of-29 from the floor in the second half overall.
Davidson finished the game shooting 42.6 percent with a 7-of-12 showing in the fourth quarter to go with an 8-for-12 line in free throws.
Fordham went up 16-7 after the first 10 minutes to start the game, scoring 14 of its points in the paint.
A quick 8-2 run by the Rams in quarter two saw Davidson fall behind by 15 (24-9), forcing it to call a timeout with 7:13 to go. The Wildcats started to chip away though, running off a 7-0 spurt and would finish the rest of the quarter outscoring the Rams 13-4 to get within 28-22 at halftime.
Next up for the Wildcats is an Education Day game, Jan. 31, at George Washington in Washington, D.C., with gametime at 12 p.m.
GAME NOTES: This was the 10th meeting all-time between both team's women's basketball programs, as the series started when the 'Cats joined the A-10 in 2014-15 … the Wildcats halted their three-game skid in the series and moved to 3-7 vs. the Rams … it was the first win on the road in the series for the 'Cats … Davidson is 5-6 on the season in road games with a 3-0 record in league play … Donovan has 11 double-doubles in her career ... the Wildcats won their program-best fourth straight A-10 road game dating back to the final away game in 2017-18 ... they also tallied their third road win in a row currently ... the four-point win was Davidson's first this year in games decided by five points or less.
