RICHMOND, Va.  — The Davidson men's tennis team was unable to stop a red-hot Richmond team, as the Spiders won their 17th consecutive match by taking a 6-1 home decision Saturday in Atlantic 10 play.
Â
The Spiders, who are coached by former Wildcat assist Ben Johnson, moved to 18-2 overall and 3-0 in league play, while the 'Cats fell to 14-6 and 4-2 in A-10 matches. It was just their second defeat in the past seven matches.
Â
Senior J.B. Gough scored the lone team point for the 'Cats with a victory at No. 5 singles for his third straight win and 11th on the season.
Â
Despite the setback, the 'Cats battled to the end at several positions, starting in doubles play. The No. 1 team of Axel Fries and Gough took the Spiders top team to a tie-breaker before falling, 7-2. The defeat snapped a season-high eight-match win streak for the duo and was just their fourth defeat in 18 matches.
Â
The pair of Shamael Chaudhry and David Hager pulled out a tie-breaker win at No. 2 (7-4) for their first win together, but Richmond got the doubles point behind a 6-3 win at No. 3.
Â
Chaudhry fell in straight sets at No. 1 singles, but did force a tie-breaker in the second set before the match ended at 7-5 in the tie-breaker. Fries pushed his Spider opponent to three sets, but also came up short in the end, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
Â
Freshman Thomas Mason won nine games in his match at No. 6, but it was not enough in a 6-4, 7-5 defeat.
Â
Davidson will take on N.C. Central tomorrow on the road in a 12 p.m. match in Durham, N.C.
