DAVIDSON, N.C. — For the second game in a row, sophomore Justine Lyon hit the 20-point mark and Davidson hung with first place Dayton until the final five minutes before falling 68-52 Wednesday evening in Atlantic 10 women's basketball inside John M. Belk Arena.
The Wildcats were within seven points, 53-46, after a Kyla Roland offensive putback and 5:40 left in the fourth quarter. Dayton would push its lead out to 10 a minute later, but a Lyon free throw at 3:32 cut the deficit to nine, 57-48.
It was as close as the 'Cats got though, with Dayton getting a free throw and three-pointer on its next two possessions to go up 61-48 and eventually take the 16-point win.
Lyon dropped in 22 points on the night, hitting 8-of-15 shots to go with four free throws. She also added five rebounds.
Ally Welling came off the bench for nine points, hitting a season-best 5-of-6 free throws, while Roland and Melanie Ransom scored seven each. Mackenzie Latt was held to three points, but had seven rebounds, a season-high five assists and a pair of blocks.
Dayton (15-7, 9-1 A-10) put two players in double figures, led by Lauren Cannatelli's 27 points off the bench. She drained seven of the Flyers' eight three-pointers, with four of them coming in the second quarter.
Davidson held a 12-11 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes, before Dayton pulled ahead by nine points (23-14) four minutes into the next quarter with a 12-2 run. Cannatelli buried three shots from downtown during the spurt.
Lyon canned a triple of her own a few minutes later and Roland hit a layup to get the Wildcats (3-19, 1-9 A-10) back within two, 23-21. The 'Cats headed into the break down just five points, 32-27.
Ransom kept Davidson close in the third quarter with seven points, as Dayton only had a two-point advantage in the quarter, 15-13.
Dayton held a 52-35 edge on the glass, getting 20 of those rebounds on offense and turning those into 22 second-chance points, while its bench scored 41 points. Davidson hauled in 15 offensive rebounds and scored 18 points off the Flyers' 20 miscues.
The Wildcats begin a two-game road trip with a visit to Amherst, Mass., to face UMass Saturday at 2 p.m.
GAME NOTES: This was the third meeting all-time between the two schools women's basketball programs … the Flyers have won all three meetings … Lyon's 20-point effort was her fifth of the season, while she had her 14th double-digit scoring game … Davidson has had hit the double-digit mark in offensive rebounds in 20 of its 22 games … Latt has led the team in rebounding 16 times this year … the junior moved into 12th all-time in career scoring with 1,102 points.
