HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Despite a game-high 26 points from Peyton Aldridge and a 23-4 run that erased a 12-point deficit, Davidson fell in the closing seconds to New Mexico State, 69-68, on day one of the Diamond Head Classic.
Aldridge, who just missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer, was joined in double figures by Jon Axel Gudmundsson's 11 points to go along with 9 rebounds and 5 assists in 40 minutes.
After the Aggies built a 45-33 advantage early in the second half, the Wildcats responded with a 23-4 run, capped off by a Will Magarity two-handed jam, to grab their largest lead, 56-49, with 8 minutes to play.
New Mexico State (10-2) eventually went back in front, 67-66, on a Zach Lofton putback, but Aldridge had an answer at the other end to give the advantage back to the 'Cats with 21 second remaining.
The Aggies grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds in the closing seconds, including one from Jemerrio Jones, who scored the game-winner with 8 seconds left.
New Mexico State finished with a 35-29 edge on the glass and 14-0 difference in second-chance points.
Davidson (4-5) used a 10-4 spurt late in the first half to cut a nine-point deficit to 30-27, before the Aggies closed with five straight to make it 35-27 at the break.
The Wildcats shot 56 percent after intermission to finish at 47.1 percent, while holding New Mexico State to 42.6 percent.
Eli Chuha and Keyon Jones paced four Aggies in doubles figures with 13 points each.
