BOONE, N.C. — Junior Justine Lyon hit a driving layup on the baseline with 6.7 seconds and Davidson forced a turnover on Appalachian State's last possession to earn a hard-fought 59-57 road win inside the Holmes Center in women's basketball Sunday afternoon.
Davidson (2-2) saw ASU erase a 56-47 lead with 3:45 to go by going on a 10-1 run, capped off by back-to-back three-pointers from Lainey Gosnell to tie the game up at 57-all.
After a quick timeout by the Wildcats to advance the ball to midcourt, Lyon gathered in a pass on the far side and drove baseline, banking in the game-winner on a layup to make it 59-57. The junior then forced the Mountaineers' 25th turnover of the game to seal up the win.
Lyon was one of four 'Cats to score in double figures, finishing with 12 points and added a season-high tying seven boards, two assists, a block and a season-best three steals.
Sarah Donovan and Mackenize Latt dropped in 14 points each, a season high for Donovan, and Latt tied Lyon with seven boards. In her first collegiate start, Saeeda Abdul-Aziz netted a season-high 10 points.
Appalachian State, which remained winless at 0-4, was paced by Gosnell's 20 points, while Kaila Craven added 15 off the bench. Bayley Plummer had 16 rebounds and eight points.
Davidson had another tough shooting day, finishing at 31.8 percent and hit 6-of-25 from behind the arc. Its defense held ASU to 35.8 percent, while both teams hauled in 43 rebounds apiece, the Wildcats second 40-rebound effort of the season.
Davidson got off to a fast start going up 11-4 and pushed its lead out to 18-8 at the end of the first quarter. Latt and Donovan tallied 11 points combined in the quarter and the Wildcats scored 11 points off ASU turnovers.
The lead grew to 26-13 in the second quarter despite a tough shooting quarter for the 'Cats, who were just 4-of-18. Appalachian State took advantage, going on an 8-0 run near the end of the quarter before Davidson held a 28-21 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, it looked like the Wildcats would pull away, going up 42-29 on a three-ball from Lyon with 5:30 on the clock. ASU once again came back, closing the quarter on a 12-4 run to make it 46-41.
Davidson returns home for its home opener this coming Wednesday, Nov. 22, against UNC Asheville at 7 p.m.
