JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — East Tennessee State hit seven of its game-high 10 three-pointers in the second quarter and Davidson was never able to recover, falling 76-56 Saturday afternoon inside Brooks Gym in women's basketball non-conference action.
The Wildcats had leads of 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, then advantages of 17-13 and 21-16 in the second quarter with 4:40 left before ETSU went on a 22-4 run to end the second quarter to turn a five-point deficit into a 38-25 lead it would not relinquish.
The Bucs (3-4) hit seven three-pointers in the quarter, including five of them during the run. They came into the game shooting just 29 percent for the season from behind the arc, but finished the quarter 5-for-5 and 10-of-24 for the game.
Besides the 10 three pointers, ETSU also took advantage of 22-Wildcat turnovers, getting 34 points off those miscues.
Tianna Tarter led all scorers with 25 points to go with five rebounds and six assists. Joining their ESTU teammate in double digits was Shamauria Bridges (16) and Raven Dean (12, 10 rebounds). Bridges finished 4-of-6 from three-land, adding two of them during the second quarter run.
Sophomore Justine Lyon had a solid all-around game for the 'Cats, scoring a career-best 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting with three free throws, while adding six rebounds, two steals and a block.
Mackenzie Latt reached the double-figure mark for the fifth straight game with 12 points and tallied her first double-double of the year with a season-high 10 rebounds. She matched her season-best with three blocks.
Chloe Johnson came off the bench for eight points, while Ally Welling, in her first collegiate start, scored five points and hauled in seven rebounds.
The Wildcats (0-8) had their first lead of the season at the end of the first quarter, grabbing a 13-10 advantage by ending the quarter on a 7-2 run. They held ETSU to just 3-of-15 shooting in the quarter.
A Welling three-point play made it 17-13 early in the second quarter. Later after a Wildcat timeout, a pair of quick buckets from Latt and Johnson put Davidson up 21-16, its largest lead of the game, with 4:40 left. That lead would not last as ETSU went on its game-changing 22-4 run to close the quarter up 13 points at halftime.
Behind Lyons' 11 third-quarter points, Davidson stayed within 10, ending the quarter down 53-43. It would be as close as the Wildcats could get though, as ETSU opened the final quarter scoring 13 of the first 18 points to push its lead out to 20.
Davidson reached the double-figure mark in offensive rebounds for the eighth straight game getting 14 and hit the 40-board mark overall for the fourth time. It also had a game-high 28 points in the paint and a team season-best 12 second-chance points.
Davidson returns home for a two-game stay, starting with a 7 p.m. contest next Wednesday, Dec. 7, against High Point.
GAME NOTES: This was the 28th meeting all-time between the two schools women's basketball programs, dating back to the 1993-94 season … Davidson leads now 15-13 in the series … with her 12 points, Latt is now 133 points away from reaching the 1,000-mark for her career … the double-double for the junior was the 14th of her career … Davidson matched its season high with 12 fast-break points.
