EAST LANSING, Mich. — Davidson opened its 2016-17 season on the road and fell to No. 22 Michigan State, which used an 18-2 run to open the game in taking a 70-34 decision against the Wildcats in women's basketball inside the Breslin Center.
Despite forcing a game-high 21 turnovers and pocketing 15 steals, including eight in the first quarter, the Wildcats (0-1) could not overcome a 1-of-15 shooting performance to start the game. MSU, which held an 18-2 lead at the end of the first quarter, would lead by as many as 39 points the rest of the way.
Three Wildcats tied for team-high honors in scoring, led by Kianna Speight, Justine Lyon and Andrea Robinson with seven points. Robinson was making her collegiate debut and finished 3-for-4 from the floor with a free throw.
Preseason Atlantic 10 All-Third Team pick Mackenzie Latt was held in check with five points, nine below her scoring average from last year. But, the junior contributed team highs of seven rebounds, three blocks and three steals in 34 minutes. The three steals gave her 100 for her career.
Saadia Timpton came off the bench to haul in seven boards and dish out three assists, while Chloe Johnson, in her first game as a Wildcat, netted three points, pocketed three steals and dished out two assists.
Michigan State's Tori Jankoska led all scorers with 26 points on 8-of-18 shooting, including 5-for-12 from behind the arc. She also added eight rebounds and four assists.
Taryn McCutcheon was the other Spartan to reach double digits with 11 points to go with nine assists, while Taya Reimer scored nine points and pulled in 11 rebounds.
MSU used a 23-10 third quarter to go up 52-20 and put the game out of reach for the 'Cats. The Spartans hit 10-of-19 shots in the quarter.
Davidson scored 22 of its 34 points in the paint and pulled in a game-high 16 offensive rebounds. The 15 steals were the most since pocketing that many at Winthrop, Dec. 12, 2014.
Davidson turns around and will travel to Kalamazoo to face Western Michigan for the first time Sunday with a 1 p.m. game.
GAME NOTES: This was just the third meeting all-time between the two schools women's basketball programs, with Michigan State having won all three games … this was the second year in a row the Spartans were ranked when facing the Wildcats … it was the second time both teams have opened up against each other to start a new season, with the last time coming back in the first meeting all-time during the 2003-04 season when the Wildcats played in the Spartan Classic … Davidson fell to 10-28 in season openers all-time, while going 8-17 since the program was restarted in 1992-93 … the 'Cats are now 7-15 during that time period as well when opening on the road ... Davidson saw its 16-game streak of dishing out double-digit assists come to an end, dishing out seven for the game.
