DAVIDSON, N.C. —  The Davidson women's tennis team took five of the six singles spots on their way to securing the program's first-ever Atlantic 10 win Saturday morning with a 6-1 decision over visiting George Mason at the Covington Tennis Courts.

The Wildcats (6-3, 1-0 A-10) snapped a two-game skid, while sending the Patriots to their fifth defeat in their eight matches played and first setback in A-10 action. The two schools last played each other in 1988.

Playing under sunny skies and outside for the first time this season, Davidson was very sharp. It opened the team match by grabbing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 (8-1) and 3 (8-5) positions.

Led by Ava Todd, the 'Cats then dominated the singles matches. The freshman, who was named the Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week on Wednesday, pushed her win streak to eight in a row after a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 4, the first of the season for her at that slot. Todd is a team-best 8-1 on the year.

Winning by the same score was Sarah Stein at No. 3 as she won her second straight to improve to 6-3 on the season.

Davidson's top two singles players, Elaina Cummer and Anna Catharine Feaster, also won their sixth matches of the season. Cummer took a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 and Feaster blanked her opponent at No. 2 with 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Jenna Brunner ran her singles record to 5-4 on the year with a nice 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5 to finish off the scoring.

Freshman Cassidy Shell nearly gave Davidson the sweep in singles play, but came up short after winning her opening set 7-5. She fell 6-3 in the second set, and with the team match decided, dropped a 10-8 super tie-breaker to finish it out.

Davidson remains at home, playing tomorrow against A-10 foe Richmond at 1 p.m. to close out the weekend.
