CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Jack Gibbs scored a career-high 41 points on 14-of-17 shooting to lead Davidson to a convincing 109-74 victory over cross-county rival Charlotte, Tuesday evening at Halton Arena.
The Wildcats, who won the annual Battle for the Hornets' Nest Trophy for the third consecutive year, improve to 5-0 for the first time since 1968-69.
With former Wildcat standout and 2015 NBA MVP Stephen Curry in attendance, Gibbs started 14-of-14 from the floor and scored 25 points prior to intermission.
Along with Curry, Gibbs is the only other Wildcat to score more than 35 points in a contest the last 20 years.
Like Gibbs, Brian Sullivan also hit 6 treys en route to his second-straight 23-point performance, while Peyton Aldridge and Jordan Barham added 18 and 14, respectively.
In addition to opening 16-of-19 from the floor and 8-of-10 from deep, the Wildcats led by 25 in the first half before going to the break up, 59-43.
After torching the nets for 67.7 percent in the first 20 minutes, the Wildcats finished the game at 58.1 percent (36-62) and 51.7 percent (15-29) from behind the 3-point arc.
Davidson opened the second half on a 29-7 streak, highlighted by 14 points from Gibbs to take its largest lead of the contest, 88-50, with 13:01 to play.
Bernard Sullivan led three 49ers (1-6) in double figures with 20 points.
