AMHERST, Mass. – Davidson closed a back-and-forth contest on a 14-4 streak to defeat UMass, 71-63, and capture its first-ever Atlantic 10 road win, Wednesday evening at the Mullins Center.
Trailing 59-57 with under four minutes to play, Brian Sullivan and Tyler Kalinoski sparked the game-changing run with a trey and 3-point play in consecutive trips to put the Wildcats up for good.
The backcourt duo paced four Davidson (12-3, 3-1 A-10) players in double figures with 14 points each. Peyton Aldridge finished with 13 points, nine boards and three blocks, while Jack Gibbs also scored 13 points.
Kalinoski, who hit the 1,000-point plateau on Saturday, also recorded six assists and five steals.
In a game that featured 10 lead changes and six ties, the Wildcats shot 41.3 percent, but finished 6-of-6 from the charity stripe in the final minute and 57 seconds.
Davidson was impressive at the defensive end forcing 16 turnovers while holding the Minutemen to just 40.7 percent, including a 4-for-17 (.235) effort from long range.
After falling behind early, the Wildcats used a 16-2 run midway through the opening half to take a 28-19 lead. UMass closed the period with a spurt of its own to cut the deficit to 30-28 at the break.
Cady Lalanne led UMass (9-8, 2-2 A-10) with 17 points and 13 rebounds for his 25th career double-double. Derrick Gordon, Trey Davis and Demetrius Dyson each finished with 10 points for the Minutemen, who held a 41-37 edge on the glass.
Davidson will wrap up its brief road swing Saturday with a 6 p.m. contest at Richmond. The Wildcats and Spiders met 11 days ago, an 81-67 win for Davidson in its first-ever A-10 game.
