ASHEVILLE, N.C. – De'Mon Brooks recorded his 11th career double-double with 26 points and 12 rebounds as top-seeded Davidson cruised past Samford, 77-54, in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Southern Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Saturday afternoon at the U.S. Cellular Center.
The Wildcats will play fifth-seeded Western Carolina in tomorrow's first semifinal contest at 6 p.m.
With its 13th straight triumph, Davidson (20-11) has posted 20 wins under head coach Bob McKillop 12 times, including eight of the last 10 seasons. The Wildcats have now reached the 20-win plateau 21 times in school history.
Voted player of the year for the second time earlier this week, Brooks finished 9-of-17 from the floor, while making both of his 3-point attempts and going 6-for-8 at the line. Jack Gibbs, a member of the league's all-freshman squad, and Jordan Barham also scored in double digits with 14 and 10, respectively.
Davidson raced out to a 28-8 advantage highlighted by a combined 20 points from Brooks (12) and Gibbs (8), who in the process opened 6-for-6 from the floor, including four 3-pointers. After the Bulldogs used a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to 38-26 with 38 seconds left in the half, the Wildcats closed with four straight including a Brooks' two-handed follow up dunk, to take a 42-26 lead into the break.
The Wildcats shot just 43.1 percent (25-58) overall and 30.4 percent (7-23) from long range, but turned 15 Samford (13-20) miscues into 19 points and converted 15 offensive rebounds into 21 second-chance points.
Late in the contest Davidson reeled off 11 straight points, including consecutive treys from Brian Sullivan and Gibbs to push its lead to as many as 25, 67-42, and put the game out of reach.
Jordan Capps scored 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting to lead the Bulldogs, who concluded the game shooting 45.1 percent.
