'Cats Drop an Overtime Heartbreaker in Home Finale, 72-70

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Appalachian State used a 16-0 run at the end of regulation and the beginning of overtime to rally past Davidson, 72-70, in Southern Conference women's basketball action Monday night inside Belk Arena.
Trailing 63-53 with 2:18 to play in regulation after a jumper in the paint by Shannon Eriksson, the Mountaineers forced overtime with another unanswered run started and ended by 3-point plays from Maryah Syndor.
Maryah Sydnor led four ASU players in double figures with 24 points to go along with 11 rebounds.
In the extra session, Appalachian State (12-15, 9-8 SoCon) scored the first six points and didn't look back. A Laura Murray three-ball got Davidson to within two (70-68) with 1:46 left and then in the closing seconds, Shneeka Center had a chance to force a second overtime, but was unable to get her shot to go with four ticks remaining.
After the Mountaineers used a 9-0 spurt capped off by six straight from Sydnor to grab their first lead, 47-46, with 12:10 left, Davidson (13-14, 10-6 SoCon) responded with a 12-1 streak to push the margin to as many as 10, 58-48. The run continued to 17-6 for the 63-53 lead, before ASU made its run.
Dakota Dukes tallied her eighth double-double of the season on 14 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Murray also added 14 points in her final career home game, while Eriksson (11) and Lillian McCabe (10) each hit the 10-point mark.
Hannah Early filled the box score with nine points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals. Center, in her last home game, came off the bench for nine points and four rebounds.
Joining Sydnor in double figures for ASU was Katie Mallow with 13, while Bria Huffman and KeKe Cooper had 11 each.
Early in the first half, the two teams traded runs to find themselves tied, 26-26. Davidson broke the deadlock with nine consecutive points before heading to the break up, 35-31.
Despite struggling from the floor, the Wildcats held a commanding advantage on the glass and turned 10 turnovers into 14 points in the opening 20 minutes. The Wildcats finished with 22 points off 17 ASU turnovers for the game.
Neither team shot well from the field with Davidson shooting at a 36.9 percent clip compared to ASU's 38.9 percent. The 'Cats did swish home 16-of-18 free throws and dished out 17 assists on their 24 made field goals.
Appalachian State held a 47-43 edge on the glass, with 21 of those rebounds coming on offense for 16 second-chance points.
Davidson hits the road for its final two games of the regular season starting Friday, Feb. 28, at Furman for a 7 p.m. tip.
GAME NOTES: Davidson finished its home schedule with a 7-7 record, including 6-3 in SoCon games … Davidson fell to 23-6 at home in SoCon games dating back to 2011-12 … eight times this season the Wildcats have had four double-digit scorers in a game ... the overtime defeat was Davidson's first since 2006-07 at Wofford, when it dropped a 68-65 decision ... they had been 4-0 in the last four overtime games.
