BUFFALO, N.Y. – Niagara placed four players in double figures and held Davidson to just 36.1 percent from the floor as the Purple Eagles knocked off the Wildcats, 83-72, in non-conference men's basketball action Wednesday night in First Niagara Center.
Tom Droney led Davidson (4-6) with 17 points, including 8-of-10 from the free-throw line, while Jake Belford scored a career-high 13 in his first game since the season-opener at Duke.
Niagara (3-8), which shot 52 percent after intermission and 48 percent for the game, was led by Antonie Mason, the nation's leading scorer, with 21 points. Marvin Jordan added 17 points, Tahjere finished with 16 and Ramone Snowden came off the bench to score 12.
The first 20 minutes featured nine ties and 13 lead changes before the Wildcats closed the period on a 9-4 spurt to take a 34-31 advantage into the half.
Niagara opened the second half on a 16-5 streak and eventually stretched its lead to nine, 54-45, with 11:21 left. After the Wildcats cut the deficit to 56-53 on a Droney layup at the 7:28 mark, the Purple Eagles responded with another run to go up by as many as 12 to put the game out of reach.
In addition to going just 6-of-30 from behind the 3-point arc, Davidson made 16-of-21 attempts at the charity stripe.
The Purple Eagles got to the line 40 times, making 29 of their tries for a final clip of 72.5 percent.
Despite the loss, the Wildcats held a 38-37 edge on the glass, including 14 offensive rebounds, but were only able to turn them into two second-chance points.
Davidson returns home Sunday for a 2 p.m. tip against Drexel at Belk Arena.
