Golf Places Ninth at SoCon Men’s Golf Championships; Fountain, Skeadas Named All-SoCon

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sophomore Richard Fountain battled back into the Top 10 Tuesday as Davidson placed ninth at 906 (305+298+303) in the 2012 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship at the Ralston Creek Course on Daniel Island. Fountain and junior John Skeadas represented the Wildcats on the All-SoCon team announced after the tournament.

Fountain fired a final round, two-under-par 70 to move into a tie for 10th place individually at 220 (73+77+70), four-over par. Skeadas entered the third and final round in third place, but fired a 10-over 82 to slide back into a tie for 32nd at 227 (74+71+82).

Freshman Ralph Blasey finished a stroke behind Skeadas in a tie for 35th at 228 (76+77+75). Senior Jackson Taylor finished at 234 (82+74+78).

The selection of both Fountain and Skeadas to the all-conference team gave the Wildcats two representatives for just the second time in program history. L.D. Simmons and Sollie Foy were both named to the squad in 1978. Michael Saari was last the Davidson golfer to earn a place on the team in 2009.

Chattanooga left no doubt on the course Tuesday by shooting the lowest round of the tournament, a seven-under par 281, to win by 19 strokes over defending champion Georgia Southern.

The Mocs, which opened the day with a nine-stroke lead over Samford and 11-stroke margin over Georgia Southern, started out hot on the front nine and never looked back. All four of UTC's counters were under par on the day, including a three-under 69 from champion Stephan Jaeger and a two-under par 70 from Steven Fox.

In the team competition, Georgia Southern (880, +16) shot one-over on the day. College of Charleston (882) was at 18-over par for tournament, which was good enough for third place. The Cougars were followed by Wofford (887), Samford (889), Furman (897) and Appalachian State (897) in the fourth through sixth spots, respectively. Elon (905), Davidson (906), Western Carolina (914) and UNCG (917) completed the field.

In voting conducted among the league's head coaches, Jaeger was voted as the SoCon Player of the Year for the third consecutive season, becoming the first golfer to win the award three times since the inception of the award in 1989.
