Note: The first results erroneously had Davidson tied for seventh with North Carolina. Corrected results moved North Carolina ahead three strokes to break the tie.
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Davidson men's golf team placed eighth (919=297+305+317), led by top-20 finishes by underclassmen John Skeadas and Richard Fountain, after the final round of the Seahawk Invitational Monday, hosted by UNC Wilmington on the Nicklaus Course at the Country Club of Landfall.
The Wildcats were hoping to move back into the top five after standing in sixth place following the second round Sunday, but 30 mile per hour winds Monday proved difficult to contend with.
Skeadas and Fountain both placed in a tie for 18th place in the three-round tournament, finishing at 224, eight-over par, on the par-72, 6918-yard course. Skeadas was within four strokes of the lead after two rounds Sunday (145=72+73), but fired a 79 in the final round. Fountain (73+78+73) moved into the top-20 after leading the Wildcats on the final day with a one-over-par 73.
Junior Jackson Taylor (235, 40th place), freshman Sam Echikson (237, t-43rd) and senior Bobby Urso (244, t-58th) also competed for Davidson.
No. 26 Wake Forest led the 12-team field entering the final round, but fired a 310 to fall down to third place at 888. UNC Wilmington won at 879 (290+293+296), while Liberty took second at 883 (303+285+295). Thomas Bass (UNCW) took medalist honors with an even-par 217 (71+73+72). Davidson was the lone Southern Conference team in the field and finished tied with North Carolina (916=301+304+311).
Davidson will next compete in the Furman Intercollegiate, March 18-20.
