First-Half Hole Too Deep For Davidson

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Trey Sumler scored 24 points, knocking down 4-of-6 3-pointers, to lead Western Carolina to an 81-73 Southern Conference men's basketball victory over Davidson Saturday afternoon at the Ramsey Activity Center.

Nik Cochran and JP Kuhlman each scored 13 points to lead Davidson, while De'Mon Brooks tallied 11 points and 12 rebounds. Clint Mann and Brendan McKillop each scored nine for the Wildcats (7-8, 1-3 SoCon).

Harouna Mutombo and Mike Williams each netted 13 points for the Catamounts (6-10, 2-2 SoCon). Tawaski King and Preston Ross both recorded eight points off the bench.

Davidson shot 36 percent, committed nine turnovers and went 3-for-13 from the free-throw line in the first half to dig an 11-point hole at the break. The Wildcats trimmed the cushion to five points five times in the second frame, but Western Carolina had an answer each time and the lead never dipped below five.

The last came with 6:53 left in the contest when Jake Cohen drained a baseline jumper that made the score 62-57. The Wildcats got a defensive stop but turned it over on their possession.

Mutombo answered with a triple from the wing to start a 7-2 spurt that helped the Catamounts open a 69-59 lead with 3:46 left. Davidson would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Davidson caught a break in warm-ups when Western Carolina was assessed a technical foul for dunking. That was about the only thing that went right for the Wildcats in the frame. Cohen missed both free throws before the tipoff, and the Catamounts jumped out to a 13-3 lead to start the contest.

The Wildcats trimmed the margin to 23-19 on a Brooks layup with 5:53 left in the period, but Western went on a 12-1 run to open a 35-20 cushion, its biggest of the game. Ross had four points during the stretch.

The margin was eight points with the Catamounts holding for the last shot, but Williams was fouled attempting a 3-pointer with 6.7 seconds left. He made all three free throws, and Jordan Downing missed a runner as the horn sounded as Western Carolina led 38-27 at the break.

The Wildcats return home for two conference games next week, beginning with a 7 p.m. contest against Furman Wednesday, Jan. 12.

Game Notes: It was the first career double-double for Brooks… It was the only regular-season meeting between Davidson and Western Carolina this season… The Wildcats fall to 13-2 all-time in the Ramsey Activity Center… Davidson shot less than 65 percent from the free-throw line for the second straight game.
