DAVIDSON, N.C. – Georgetown quarterback Scott Darby threw for 130 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 58 yards and another score to lead the Hoyas (1-0) to a 20-10 football victory over Davidson (0-1) in the teams' 2010 season opener Saturday night at Richardson Stadium.
The victory broke a 12-game losing skid for the Hoyas, dating back to 2008, which included eight in a row on the road.
Kenny Mantuo rushed for 52 yards and a score for Davidson, and quarterback Matt Heavner, making his fourth career start, threw for 135 yards on 18 completions.
Tight end Michael Blanchard led the Davidson receiving corps with six catches for 52 yards, and Mantuo caught four passes for 37 markers out of the backfield.
Peter Kidwell led the defense with nine tackles, including two for loss, as the 'Cats had nine tackles for loss and three sacks as a team. Patrick Moynahan and Daniel Astrop each recorded eight tackles.
Philip Oladeji had 64 yards on 15 carries, and Chance Logan ran 17 times for 58 yards as Georgetown outgained Davidson 166-46 on the ground. Oladeji added 44 receiving yards on three receptions.
Georgetown staked itself to a 14-0 advantage in the first half, and leading 14-10 early in the fourth quarter, used a 10-play, 81 yard-drive to deliver the knockout blow.
Darby converted a 3rd-and-12 from his own 29-yard line on that drive, hitting Patrick Ryan for 16 yards, and Logan rambled for 32 yards to give the Hoyas 1st-and-goal at the 12. Darby found Jeffrey Burke one play later for the 20-10 lead, but the Hoyas missed the extra point.
Davidson had a last gasp as it drove down to the Georgetown 38 with the help of a Justin Williams 33-yard kick return and a 16-yard completion from Heavner to Mantuo. But on 4th-and-8, Paul Sant'Ambrogio tackled Williams three yards shy of the marker after the senior caught a Heavner pass in the flat with 5:58 to play.
An interception of a tipped pass by Pat O'Donnell at the Davidson 41-yard line set up the Hoyas first touchdown, a 3-yard Darby run. The Hoyas went 54 yards in nine plays, all on the ground, to open a 14-0 cushion on a Brandon Durham 5-yard run.
The Wildcats put together a 14-play, 62-yard scoring drive of their own to make the margin 14-7. Mantuo carried most of the load, rushing for 33, and scoring the TD on a 3-yard run.
Davidson started its third drive of the second half on the Hoya 47-yard line, and moved down to the five with the help of a 17-yard pass from Heavner to Reese Williams. But Heavner's pass attempt to Williams on 3rd-and-goal fell incomplete, and Davidson settled for a 22-yard Ben Behrendt field goal.
The Wildcats return to action with a road game at Lenoir-Rhyne next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Game Notes: Mantuo moved into 13th on the Davidson career rushing chart, 72 yards away from cracking the top-10… Heavner had a career high in passing yards, while Blanchard logged a career-high in receiving markers… The 'Cats have lost eight of their last nine season openers and dropped to 7-3 in their last 10 home openers.
