DAVIDSON, N.C. – Playing their third match in the last four days to finish out the regular season, the Davidson women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision at Furman on Saturday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center.
The Wildcats concluded the regular season at 15-7 overall and 7-3 in SoCon play. They will continue their season though, as they are one of the top-four teams in the league standings to advance to the SoCon Tournament. Furman, who will also join Davidson, improved to 15-7 overall and 8-2 in league matches.
A day after taking a 6-1 home decision over Chattanooga, Davidson was never able to get going on Saturday as the Paladins started the match by taking all three doubles matches. The Wildcats played closed in all three, but fell 8-5, 8-7 and 8-5 in all three.
The lone bright spot for Davidson on the day was Samantha Galainena (Burr Ridge, Ill.) winning her career-best and team-high ninth straight singles match. The junior took over the team lead in wins with her 16th of the season by earning a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) win. She took a super tiebreaker over Susan Bitetti after the team points had been decided at the No. 5 spot. Galainena also won ran her record to 4-1 at that spot.
Davidson will now play No. 1-seeded College of Charleston (18-9, 10-0 SoCon) in the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament, Apr. 24.
