Davidson Wins Cross-County Battle With Charlotte in W. Tennis

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – By winning four of the six singles matches, the Davidson women's tennis team took a 4-3 decision over host Charlotte in a battle of cross-county rivals and pushed their win streak to three in a row on Thursday afternoon.
The 'Cats won for the third time in the past four meetings with the 49ers and improved their all-time record to 16-8 in the series. With the win, they ran their overall mark to 11-5 on the season, while the 49ers fell to 4-13.
Davidson found itself down 1-0 early after seeing its cross-county rival take all three doubles matches to open the afternoon. The No. 1 and 2 positions were a battle to the end as Davidson dropped 8-6 and 9-8 decisions.
Singles though, was a different story for the Wildcats as they regrouped and captured wins at No. 1 and 3-5 to run their team record to 61-35.
Senior Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) and junior Samantha Galainena (Burr Ridge, Ill.) each reached the 10-win mark on the season with their two-set wins. Berry took a 7-6, 6-3 decision over Alexandra Zinn at No. 1, while Galainena earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory. The duo also pushed their win streak in singles play to three straight.
Earning a win at the No. 3 spot was Alison Rauh (Tier, Germany) as the junior even her record to 8-8 on the season. She way a 7-2 tiebreaker in the first set and then cruised to a 6-1 second-set win to earn the point.
Getting the Wildcats final point in just her second collegiate singles match was Romina Clemente (Canton, Ohio). The sophomore scored a 6-2, 6-0 win over Candace Cunningham at the No. 5 spot for her second career singles win.
Davidson takes a five-day break before hosting Elon on Apr. 6 at 3 p.m.
