DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sophomore Stephani Synn (Conover, N.C.) continued her strong singles play with another win, but it was not enough to help lead Davidson as the Wildcats fell to Samford, 6-1, in their Southern Conference women's tennis opener on Saturday afternoon at the Knobloch Indoor Tennis Center.
Davidson saw its overall record fall to 7-4, while opening SoCon play at 0-1 for the second year in a row. Prior to last season-opening loss to Georgia Southern, the 'Cats had won their past five straight SoCon openers. Samford improved to 8-4 overall and 1-1 in league play as the Bulldogs avenged their 4-3 defeat to the Wildcats last year.
Synn and Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany) netted their fifth doubles win together with an 8-5 victory at No. 2 over Rebecca Kirven and Andrie Meiring, but Samford took a pair of 8-6 victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions to earn the doubles point.
The Wildcats then were not able to find an answer in singles play despite five players entering the match with winning records as Synn was the lone 'Cat to score. The sophomore pushed her season-best record to 8-1 after taking home a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Stephanie Parkison at No. 4. Her lone defeat on the year came in a three-setter vs. No. 65 Winthrop.
Senior Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) saw her personal three-match win streak halted after a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Taylor Morgan at No. 1, who won her eighth singles match of the year. Berry is 6-4 on the season at No. 1 singles.
Davidson wraps up its busy week with a 1 p.m. match against Western Carolina on Sunday, Mar. 14.
