ELON, N.C. - Brendan McKillop hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1.9 seconds left to tie the score, and Steve Rossiter topped that by stealing the inbounds pass and heaving in a triple from the wing as the buzzer sounded to lift Davidson to a 99-96 double overtime win at Elon Saturday night.
McKillop finished with a career-high 24 points, and Jake Cohen added a career-high 24. JP Kuhlman scored the last eight points in regulation for Davidson to send it into overtime and matched his career best with 24.
The Wildcats (16-14, 11-7 SoCon) trailed by three in the second extra session after Chris Long hit a pair of free throws with 14.4 seconds left. Davidson set up a 3-pointer for Kuhlman, who missed, but Nik Cochran tracked down the rebound. The 'Cats found McKillop deep on the wing, and the junior drained it with 1.9 seconds left.
Rossiter then made a heady play and stole the inbounds pass at the foul line extended on the left side of the court. The senior hit 3-pointer as he was falling out of bounds that beat the buzzer for the win.
After Davidson trailed by as many as four points in the first overtime, McKillop tied the game on a conventional 3-point play with 1:06 to go. After Long missed a 3-pointer for Elon (8-22, 5-13 SoCon), Kuhlman missed a jumper, but Cohen got the board, and Davidson called a timeout with 13 seconds left. McKillop had a decent look at a long triple try as the buzzer sounded but the shot rimmed out.
Drew Spradlin led the Phoenix with 25 points to go along with eight rebounds, and Long finished with 16 points, nine assists and six boards. Adam Constantine recorded 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Devan Carter scored 12.
Rossiter finished with nine points, and Ben Allison collected eight points and seven rebounds for Davidson.
Davidson had an early 27-11 lead in the game after McKillop drained four straight 3-pointers. Elon came roaring back with a 28-5 run and took a seven-point advantage on a Carter jumper with 50 seconds left in the first half.
The Phoenix took a six-point cushion into halftime and led 70-56 on a Spradlin 3-pointer with 5:53 left in regulation. Cochran's 3-point play started a 13-3 spurt that brought the 'Cats to within four points with 2:36 left.
After a Long layup that made the score 75-69 with 43 seconds left, Kuhlman took over, scoring the last eight points of the period for Davidson, including two straight 3-pointers that made the score 77-77 with six seconds left. Long missed a contested triple as the horn sounded to send the game to overtime.
The Wildcats play their first game of the SoCon Tournament at 2 p.m. Friday in Bojangles Arena in Charlotte.
Game Notes: McKillop had a career-high seven 3-pointers… It was the largest second-half deficit the 'Cats have come back from this season… It was Davidson's third overtime game this season, and the 'Cats are 2-1… Cohen also had a career high nine rebounds.
