CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Chris Long scored 15 points and netted four free throws in the last minute to lead Elon to a 66-59 men's basketball victory over Davidson in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament at Bojangles Coliseum Friday afternoon.
Davidson (16-15) placed four players in doubles figures, led by JP Kuhlman's 12 points. Will Archambault tallied 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while Brendan McKillop and Jake Cohen each scored 10.
Adam Constantine recorded a game-high 16 points for Elon (9-22), and Drew Spradlin had 13 points and five rebounds. Terrance Birdette scored 11.
The Wildcats trailed 60-58 late in the game when Steve Rossiter was fouled going to the basket. The senior hit the first free throw, and Davidson got the offensive board off a miss on the second.
The Wildcats got two great looks thanks to another offensive rebound, but could not cash in on the chance to take the lead. Rossiter was whistled for a foul as Long drove to the hoop at the other end, and the sophomore buried both foul shots to give the Phoenix a 62-59 cushion with 43 seconds left.
Archambault had a decent look at a 3-point try on the 'Cats' next possession, but it came off the rim and into the hands of Birdette, who was fouled. He made both shots from the stripe with 24 seconds left, and Long added two more with six seconds left to seal the victory.
Davidson shot 35.6 percent from the field in the game, including 5-for-24 from 3-point range. The 'Cats' relentless work on the glass (43-29 edge) helped them keep it close, and 17 offensive rebounds turned into 18 second-chance points.
Elon used an 8-2 run to push a five-point lead to a 51-40 cushion with 11:46 to go in the contest. Birdette scored six of the eight and capped it with a triple from the wing. The Wildcats responded with a 13-1 run and took a brief 53-32 lead on a Rossiter free throw with 6:16 left. Rossiter started the spurt with a layup, and Kuhlman added five points during the stretch.
The first half saw Elon race out to an 8-2 lead to start the game as Spradlin and TJ Douglas made triples, but the Wildcats raced right back with a 10-3 run to grab a 12-11 lead. Archambault scored four points during the stretch, and McKillop capped it with a layup.
The game would go back-and-forth from there with three ties and six lead changes. With the score tied 23-23, Elon finished the half with an 11-4 run to lead 34-27 at the break. Constantine scored five points during the spurt.
The Wildcats shot 34.4 percent from the floor in the first frame, including 2-of-12 from long range, and committed nine turnovers, which Elon turned into 10 points.
