Wildcats Hold Off Furman 86-81

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Will Archambault secured an offensive rebound in the final second to stop a late Furman rally, as Davidson took an 86-81 victory over Furman in Southern Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night in Timmons Arena.

The Wildcats held a 14-point margin with 1:50 remaining but Furman outscored Davidson 19-8 to make it just 84-81 with nine seconds remaining. Bryant Barr was fouled on the inbounds play after Darryl Evans made it a one-possession game with nine seconds remaining, but Barr missed both free throws. Fellow senior Archambault was there though to haul in the rebound off the second miss, was fouled, and then hit both free throws to ice the win.

Archambault led four Davidson (8-9, 3-2 SoCon) scorers in double-figures with 15 points, while also adding five rebounds and four assists. JP Kuhlman added 14 points, a team-leading six assists and three rebounds. Steve Rossiter scored a season-high 13 points, and added six rebounds, an assist and a block.

Amu Saaka led Furman (8-8, 2-3 SoCon) with 34 points and nine rebounds, while adding two assists and a steal. Saaka started the Paladin rally by sinking a pair of free throws and then hitting three-consecutive 3-pointers.

Jake Cohen hauled in a team-leading seven rebounds to go along with 11 points, two assists and a steal. Cohen was a perfect 2-of-2 from behind the arc, going 3-of-5 from the field and hitting 3-of-4 from the charity stripe.

The 'Cats hit 19-of-31 free throw attempts in the second-half, sinking 28-of-44 for the game. Furman hit 17-of-24 in the second, and 26-of-36 total.

Furman also had four in double-figures, as Jordan Miller and Darryl Evans both added 11 points. Bryson Barnes scored 10.

Davidson shot 41.4 percent for the game, while Furman shot 51.1 percent from the field. However, the 'Cats held a 37-29 advantage on the board, scoring 13 second-chance points to Furman's four.

Davidson had enjoyed a double-digit cushion for much of the second half. A Cohen 3-pointer from the top of the arc with 13:35 remaining put Davidson ahead by 12, giving the 'Cats a double-digit cushion they would not relinquish until the 1:15 mark. Davidson extended the lead to as much as 16.

The 'Cats had the momentum entering the second half after taking a four-point lead into halftime, finishing the first half on a 10-1 run. Kuhlman found Barr for a wide-open 3-pointer in the far corner with just 1.5 seconds remaining in the opening frame, and Rossiter was fouled underneath the basket on the play. He sank both of the ensuing free throws to complete a five-point play and give Davidson a 39-35 halftime lead.

Barr finished with nine points after going 2-for-4 from behind the arc, and hitting 3-of-6 free throw attempts.

The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday night at Wofford. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Game Notes: Kuhlman has scored in double figures in each of the last four games… the 'Cats have won six of their last eight… Davidson has won the last nine against Furman… Rossiter needs four rebounds and 18 points to become the 30th player in Davidson history to reach 500 in each category for his career… Archambault is 79 points shy of 1,000 for his career… the Wildcats have won 31 of their last 32 regular season Southern Conference games on the road… Furman and Davidson will next meet on Feb. 20 in Belk Arena
