SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Freshmen Jake Cohen and JP Kuhlman each scored 15 points, but Davidson lost a tough Southern Conference men's basketball battle at Wofford, 68-62, Saturday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Will Archambault added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Wildcats (8-10, 3-3 SoCon), and Brendan McKillop scored eight points.
Noah Dahlman led the Terriers (12-7, 4-2 SoCon) with 17 points, and Cameron Rundles scored 13 points, with nine coming from the free-throw line. Tim Johnson corralled a game-high 16 rebounds, and Jamar Diggs finished with nine points.
The Wildcats held Wofford to 40.4 percent shooting from the field, but the Terriers made their living from the foul line, canning 28-of-44 free throws, including 17-of-30 in the second frame.
Kuhlman completed a conventional 3-point play to tie the score 60-60 with 1:36 to play. After Diggs was fouled and hit 1-of-2 from the line, the Terriers got a steal, and a Dahlman layup made it a 3-point margin with 1:07 left.
Nik Cochran scored on a layup with 35.5 seconds left and trailing by a point, the 'Cats were forced to foul Rundles. The junior hit them both, and the Terriers got another steal and a fast-break layup by Brad Loesing to make the score 67-62 with 13 seconds left.
Dahlman blocked an Archambault jumper from behind on the Wildcats' next trip down the floor, and Rundles hit another free throw for the final margin.
The first half was back and forth and saw Davidson take a 31-28 lead into halftime. Davidson opened the second frame with an 8-2 run and took a 39-30 lead as Cochran made 1-of-2 from the line following a technical foul called on the Terrier bench.
The momentum switched hands from there and Wofford used a 14-0 run to take a 44-39 cushion midway through the half. The Terriers capped the stretch with free throws from Rundles and Johnson, which became part of a spurt in which Wofford was able to get to the charity stripe on eight consecutive offensive possessions. Diggs capped it with a pair from the charity stripe to give Wofford a 53-50 lead.
The margin grew to five points on a Dahlman 3-point play with 5:46 to go when Cohen ignited a mini 9-4 Davidson run with a 3-point play of his own. Kuhlman capped the run with another 3-point play to knot the score at 60-60.
Davidson returns home to host Western Carolina Wednesday, Jan. 20, at 7 p.m. in Belk Arena.
Game Notes: Kuhlman has scored in double figures in each of the last five games… Wofford broke a seven-game losing skid against the 'Cats… With 122 career games played, Archambault and Bryant Barr are now eight games away from the school record… The 'Cats, who came into the game averaging 16.7 assists a game, were credited with a season-low three… Davidson also committed a season-high 20 turnovers.
