CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Stephen Curry scored 43 points, and Davidson held Appalachian State to 36 percent shooting from the floor to earn an 84-68 victory in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament Saturday at The McKenzie Arena.
Curry was 11-of-19 from the floor, including 5-for-10 from 3-point range, and 16-for-18 from the free-throw line in 27 minutes of action. His point total tied for the third-most in SoCon Tournament history, and it was the most since Skip Henderson of Marshall netted 55 against The Citadel in 1988. Curry now needs just 18 points to move past Henderson and become the league's all-time leading scorer.
Andrew Lovedale collected 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, his 10th double-double this season, while Steve Rossiter, Max Paulhus Gosselin and Bryant Barr each scored six points.
Donald Sims led the Mountaineers (13-18) with 29 points, hitting all 12 free-throw attempts, and Josh Hunter posted 13 points and seven rebounds.
The difference for Davidson (26-6) was on the defensive ends as the 'Cats held Appalachian to 21-of-58 from the floor and forced 20 turnovers, which turned into 28 points.
The Mountaineers used a 44-33 rebounding edge and 17 second-chance points to stay in the game. Three Sims free throws capped a 13-2 run midway through the second half that whittled a nine-point Davidson lead down to one.
The 'Cats responded by scoring 10 straight points, capped by a Curry trey to make the lead 66-55 with 6:40 to play. Appalachian got the margin down to eight twice in the last 6:14 but could get no closer. Curry capped his day by launching a straightaway 35-footer as the shot clock buzzer went off that hit nothing but net. That put Davidson ahead 82-68 with 34 seconds left.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 15-5 lead on a Bryant Barr 3-pointer early in the contest. Appalachian State clawed back and tied the contest at 19-19 on a pair of Jeremi Booth free throws.
Davidson pushed the margin back to 10 points late in the stanza, but the Mountaineers responded by scoring the next seven points and cut the margin to 37-34 on an A.J. Highsmith 3-pointer. Davidson capped the half by scoring seven straight points, including six from Curry, to go into the break with a 44-34 advantage.
Davidson returns to action Sunday at 6 p.m. against the winner of Western Carolina and College of Charleston in the semifinal round.
Game Notes: Curry's five 3-pointers give him 403 for his career, making him the ninth player to go over 400… He now has 2,557 points, moving him into 38th on the NCAA Division I career scoring list… The 'Cats have now held their opponent to less than 40 percent shooting in 19 games this season and won all 19… Davidson improved to 60-34 in the SoCon Tournament… It was the 20th double-double of Lovedale's career… It was Rossiter's 100th career game played and Curry's 100th career start.
