GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Steve Rossiter set career highs in points and rebounds, and Stephen Curry scored 29 points to lead Davidson to a 75-54 Southern Conference victory over UNC Greensboro Thursday night before a crowd of 11,687 at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Rossiter finished the night with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end. Senior Andrew Lovedale recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while swiping a career-best six steals. Curry added eight boards to his game-high point total.
Curry continued his assault on the record books, passing former West Virginia great Jerry West on the SoCon career scoring list, now sitting in sixth place with 2,325 points in his two-plus years at Davidson. The Wildcats picked up their 43rd consecutive SoCon regular season win, and now sit just one back of the league record of 44, set by West Virginia from 1959-60.
After falling behind 7-1 to begin the game, Davidson head coach Bob McKillop called a timeout, which was followed by a 16-0 run by the Wildcats. Davidson held the Spartans without a point for a stretch of over six minutes of action and took a lead it would not relinquish.
Despite shooting 37.5 percent from the floor in the first half, the Wildcats capitalized on 12 offensive rebounds, scoring 17 second chance points. The Davidson (20-3, 13-0 SoCon) defense forced seven steals and held the Spartans to just eight field goals in the first 20 minutes.
The 'Cats closed the half with a flurry, pushing their halftime lead to 37-24 with back-to-back spectacular offensive plays. It started with an alley-oop dunk from Curry to Max Paulhus Gosselin and was followed by a reverse, over-the-head layup by Curry as he was falling away from the basket for his 18th point of the frame.
UNC Greensboro (3-18, 2-10 SoCon) closed the Davidson lead to six points with 13:06 remaining and looked to slice the margin down to four, but a missed dunk by the Spartans sparked a Davidson run that included a pair of Curry 3-pointers and stretched the cushion to 13 at the 8:46 mark.
Rossiter continued to be a force on the inside for the 'Cats the entire game, recording his second career double-double, which came on a second-chance three-point play. On the next possession, Rossiter collected another offensive board and dished the ball to Curry, who knocked down a 3-pointer to give Davidson a 68-49 lead.
UNC Greensboro had three players in double-figure scoring, led by Ben Stywall's 13 points. Kendall Toney added 12 points and five assists with Damian Eargle contributing 10 points and grabbing seven rebounds.
Davidson held UNCG to 37.3 percent shooting, while giving up just four made 3-pointers. The 'Cats forced 20 turnovers, which were turned into 27 points. Davidson also pulled down 25 offensive rebounds, outscoring UNC Greensboro 27-7 in second-chance points.
The Wildcats will return home this Saturday, Feb. 7, when they play host to the College of Charleston at John M. Belk Arena. The 6 p.m. contest will be televised nationally on ESPN2 with Mike Patrick and Dick Vitale on the call.
NOTES: The Wildcats reached the 20-win mark for the fifth straight season and the ninth campaign under McKillop… Davidson held an opponent to under 40 percent shooting for the 15th time this year, and has won all 15 games … Curry moved past former UNC Wilmington guard Brett Blizzard on the NCAA career list for 3-pointers with 374 made from behind the arc.
