Duke Earns Victory Over Davidson Wrestling

12/2/2009 9:13:06 PM | Wrestling

DURHAM, N.C. – Senior Ben Altman started the Davidson wrestling team off right with an opening pin, but Duke, ranked 19th-nationally in the Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine Division I Tournament Power Index, swept the last four matches to earn a 36-13 victory over the Wildcats on Wednesday night in non-conference wrestling action at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Duke (1-0) held just a slim 14-13 advantage after splitting the first six contests, but scored technical falls at 174 and 184 pounds and falls at 197 and heavyweight to secure the victory. John Barone, ranked 15th in the nation at 184 by InterMat, improved to 4-1 on the season with a pin at 197. All-American Konrad Dudziak, last season's heavyweight national runner-up and presently No. 1 in the class, scored the pin at heavyweight to remain undefeated this season.

Altman faced Duke's Nick Adamo at 125, pinning him in three minutes, 40 seconds, to give the Wildcats (0-5) an early 6-0 lead. Adamo held a 2-0 advantage with an early takedown, but Altman escaped and scored a takedown as well to hold a narrow 3-2 edge after the first period. Altman then came out strong in the second, scoring his second pin of the season 40 seconds into the frame.

Junior Alex Radsky nearly earned a win at 133 in his season debut, but was edged 7-5 by Duke's Nico Cortese. Radsky moved within one point in the final seconds, as Cortese was penalized for stalling, but Cortese held on for the decision and cut the 'Cats lead in half.

Junior Vitaly Radsky scored a major decision at 141 in his first dual action of the season. Radsky took Duke's Mike Bell down twice to take a 4-1 lead after one period. Another Radsky takedown and Bell escape put the match at 6-2 through two periods. Radsky then chose the bottom for the third stanza and earned an escape, another takedown, and eventually the riding time bonus to win 10-2.

Duke responded though by erasing Davidson's 10-3 lead with a technical fall at 149 and a quick pin at 157.

Junior Joe McGinley then pulled that 'Cats back within one though, earning a 5-0 decision over Spencer Jasper. The match was scoreless through the first two periods, but McGinley persevered in the final frame, scoring a takedown and near fall to win.

However, the Blue Devils were able to take control from there to win their third-straight over Davidson. The 'Cats had won the last meeting between the schools at Cameron in 2007.

The Wildcats will be back in action Saturday, as they will host the Davidson Open in the Baker Sports Complex. The all-day tournament is set to begin at 9 a.m.
